Autumn 2018 Events in Cowal and Argyll

Benmore Guided Tours and Explorer
March – October 2018

Benmore Gardens run guided tours starting in March and run through to the end of October so why not join a tour and take in the history, plants and seasonal highlights of Benmore.

Walking tours run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays while the Benmore Explorer Tour runs on Wednesdays and Thursdays taking a limited number of people around the gardens on a people carrier which is ideal for those with mobility restrictions.

Waverley Paddle Steamer Trips
May – October 2018

Waverley, the world’s last sea-going paddle steamer stops at Tighnabruaich pier every Wednesday on her way to the fishing village of Tarbert. Climb on board this magnificently restored paddle steamer with its distinctive towering red, black and white funnels, timber decks, gleaming brass and woodwork, then relax in the lounges, take in the stunning scenery on deck and visit the engine room to see the immaculate (and loud!) engine hard at work.

Kyles 10 Miles
8th September 2018

The Kyles 10 Miles is a scenic fun run through the picturesque Ardlamont peninsula just south of Tighnabruaich. Now in its third year, the event is open to both runners and walkers and has built a reputation as one of the best runs in Scotland due to the spectacular scenery of coastal and mountain views. There are categories to suit all ages and abilities and all are invited to the after-run ceilidh.

Tarbert Music Festival
Date to be confirmed (usually September)

The Tarbert Music Festival always produces an electric atmosphere as the village comes alive with music wherever you go! There’s a packed programme with bands and musicians playing almost every pub and other locations including an outdoor concert on the quayside on the Sunday. If you’re a musician yourself and want to join in then you’re most welcome.

Cowal Open Studios
Date to be confirmed (usually September)

The Cowal peninsula is a haven for a variety of professional artists such as painters, sculptors, weavers, potters, jewellers and photographers and for four days they will invite visitors to see firsthand where they create their art whether indoors or outdoors. During a visit to Cowal it’s hard not to be inspired by the stunning countryside, coastal views, hills and mountains and the work of the Cowal artists reflects this natural beauty. So why not come along and see artists at one with nature.

Cowalfest Walking and Arts Festival
5th – 12th October 2017

During October, we celebrate Cowalfest, a 10 day walking and arts festival with over 60 walks providing something to suit everyone such as children’s drama workshops, orienteering, horse riding, concerts and exhibitions, taking in all the local visitor attractions and making the most of the stunning scenery. Walkers come from far and wide to this large and varied walking festival, all are welcome and most of the walks are led by knowledgeable and informative walk leaders.

Dunoon Ultra Marathon
6th October 2018

Starting off at Benmore Botanical Gardens this 50k race takes in Dunoon and Loch Eck amidst some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. Stages include the beautiful (but steep!) Puck’s Glen, Loch Eck forestry trail, Glenbranter Forest, Bishop’s Glen and Dunoon shore. Every stage has views to die for but only spectators can really make the most of them!

Royal National MOD
12th – 20th October

The Royal National MOD organised by An Comunn Gàidhealach (The Highland Association in Gaelic) is an annual celebration of the Gaelic language, culture and history where the finest exponents of Gaelic singing, poetry, music, dancing, drama and other art forms will come together, this year in Dunoon, to perform to thousands of Gaelic lovers and are guaranteed to delight every audience.
